What?

Okay, so here’s the story. I set up this blog as a training diary for a ridiculous charity ‘endless triathlon’ event called Tri Till You Cry, which took place at the end of June 2011.

As I was approaching 40 and feeling like it was getting harder and harder to go through that cycle of being fit, losing it over winter, recovering fitness in the spring and so on, I had started to feel like it was now or never in terms of getting really fit and staying that way. But somehow I was not disciplined enough on my own. I needed something external… a challenge.

You can read what happened in Tri Till You Cry here. Afterwards I had to think what was next. TTYC made me believe that my knees will not take endurance running of marathon distance (at least not on roads). Most of what took place in the couple of years afterwards I’ve only just written up in summary form because I stopped using this blog late in 2011. Then I revived it and it got a bit weird: my mental health intervened in my plans, even though in many ways, all this training is about maintaining the discipline that keeps from losing control. In the longer term, I had wanted (and still want) to build up to doing some more serious adventure racing. In particular, I had a dream of doing The Tour Divide, an unsupported mountain bike race from Alberta to New Mexico along the spine of the Rockies. Trump and COVID-19 have combined to put paid to that idea for now.

However, I press on. This blog is now revived just as a training / event diary. I’m doing a mix of local running events, triathlons and whatever else takes my fancy – when things are normal, and when they aren’t, I just run anyway. It’s really just for me, but if anyone else finds it interesting, you are most welcome…
